Using Location Filters Effectively

Location filters help you receive leads only from areas you serve. Here's how to set them up for the best results.

Why Use Location Filters?

Without location filters, sellers can submit leads from anywhere. Location filters ensure you only receive leads you can actually serve.

Benefits:

  • ✅ No wasted spend on out-of-area leads
  • ✅ Sellers know exactly where you operate
  • ✅ Higher conversion rates (leads are in your service area)
  • ✅ Clearer expectations for everyone

How Location Filtering Works

When you enable location filtering:

  1. Sellers see your requirements – Your accepted locations are displayed
  2. Lead location is validated – Submitted leads must match your criteria
  3. Mismatches are flagged – Phone country vs. lead location warnings appear

Setting Up Location Filters

Step 1: Enable Location Filtering

When creating or editing a lead request:

  1. Find the Location Settings section
  2. Toggle "Filter by location" to ON

Step 2: Select Countries

Choose which countries you accept leads from:

  1. Click Select Countries
  2. Check the boxes for countries you serve
  3. You can select multiple countries

Note: If you only serve one country, select just that one.

Step 3: Select Cities (Optional)

For more precise targeting:

  1. After selecting a country, you'll see a city selector
  2. Choose specific cities you serve
  3. Leave blank to accept leads from anywhere in the selected countries

Filtering Strategies

National Coverage

For: Businesses that serve an entire country

Setup:

  • Select your country (e.g., "United Kingdom")
  • Don't select specific cities
  • All leads from that country will be accepted

Regional Coverage

For: Businesses serving specific regions or cities

Setup:

  • Select your country
  • Add specific cities (e.g., "London, Manchester, Birmingham")
  • Only leads from those cities will be accepted

Multi-Country Coverage

For: Businesses operating across borders

Setup:

  • Select multiple countries (e.g., "UK, Ireland")
  • Add cities within each country if needed
  • Leads from any selected location will be accepted

Hyper-Local Coverage

For: Small businesses with limited service area

Setup:

  • Select your country
  • Select only your city
  • Consider adding neighboring cities you'd travel to

Location Matching Rules

When a seller submits a lead, the location is checked against your filters:

Lead Location Your Filter Result
London, UK UK (all cities) ✅ Accepted
Manchester, UK UK (London only) ❌ Blocked
Dublin, Ireland UK only ❌ Blocked
Liverpool, UK UK (Liverpool, Manchester) ✅ Accepted

Phone Number Location Warnings

Referr validates phone numbers and checks if they match the lead's stated location.

What sellers see:

  • If a phone number's country code doesn't match the lead's location, a warning appears
  • Sellers can still submit, but are encouraged to verify

Why this matters:

  • Catches potential errors
  • Filters accidental wrong-country submissions
  • Maintains lead quality

Common Location Setup Mistakes

❌ Being Too Restrictive

Problem: Selecting only one city when you could serve surrounding areas.

Result: Missing leads from nearby locations you'd happily travel to.

Fix: Add neighboring cities within your travel radius.

❌ Being Too Broad

Problem: Selecting an entire country when you only serve one region.

Result: Leads from areas you can't serve, wasted budget.

Fix: Add specific cities to narrow your coverage.

❌ Forgetting to Update

Problem: Expanding your service area but not updating location filters.

Result: Missing leads from new areas you now cover.

Fix: Review location filters whenever your coverage changes.

Special Situations

Remote/Online Services

If you provide services remotely (consultations, online coaching, etc.):

Option 1: Disable location filtering entirely

  • Accept leads from anywhere
  • Clarify in your description that services are remote

Option 2: Filter by language/timezone

  • Select countries where your language is spoken
  • Consider timezone compatibility

Multiple Service Areas

If you have teams in different locations:

Option 1: One lead request, multiple cities

  • Add all cities you serve to one request
  • Manage distribution internally

Option 2: Separate lead requests per region

  • Create different requests for each area
  • Customize pricing and descriptions per region
  • Better tracking of performance by location

How Leads Show Location

When you receive inbound leads, location is displayed as:

  • Country flag – Visual indicator
  • City name – Specific location
  • Phone country – From number validation

Example: 🇬🇧 London, United Kingdom

Editing Location Filters

How to Change

  1. Go to Lead Requests
  2. Find your lead request
  3. Click Edit
  4. Update your location settings
  5. Click Save

What Happens to Pending Leads?

  • Leads already submitted are not affected
  • New submissions must match updated filters
  • No need to re-review existing leads

Tips for Best Results

  1. Start broader, narrow later – You can always restrict further
  2. Match your actual coverage – Don't guess, know your service area
  3. Consider travel willingness – How far will you go for a good job?
  4. Update seasonally – Expand in slow periods, restrict when busy
  5. Check competitor coverage – See what locations are underserved
