Lead Submission Blocked as Duplicate
When you try to submit a lead and receive a duplicate warning, this article explains why it happens and what you can do.
Understanding Duplicate Detection
Referr uses automatic duplicate detection to:
- Protect buyers from paying for the same lead twice
- Maintain marketplace quality
- Ensure fair transactions
When Duplicate Detection Triggers
During Submission
You may see an error like:
- "This lead appears to be a duplicate"
- "Similar lead already submitted"
- "This contact was previously submitted"
What Gets Checked
The system compares:
| Field | Match Type |
|---|---|
| Phone number | Exact match |
| Email address | Exact match |
| Name + Company | Fuzzy match |
| Address | Similarity check |
Types of Duplicates
1. Self-Duplicate
You submitted this lead before to the same buyer.
This means:
- Same contact information
- To the same lead request
- May be recent or older submission
Solution: Check your submission history before submitting.
2. Cross-Seller Duplicate
Another seller already submitted this lead.
The buyer already has this contact from:
- A different seller
- A previous purchase
Solution: This contact isn't available for this request. Submit elsewhere.
3. Buyer's Own Data
The buyer already has this contact in their system.
Some buyers upload their existing contacts to prevent duplicates.
Solution: This contact isn't needed. Find other leads.
4. Similar Information
Not exact, but too similar.
The system flagged:
- Same phone with different formatting
- Same email with typo variations
- Same person at different address
Solution: Verify the information is actually different.
What to Do When Blocked
Step 1: Verify the Lead
Confirm the contact information is:
- Correct and accurate
- Not previously submitted by you
- Actually unique
Step 2: Check Your History
- Go to My Leads → Submitted
- Search for this contact
- Filter by buyer/request
If you find a match, the duplicate detection is working correctly.
Step 3: Try Other Lead Requests
If blocked from one request:
- The lead may be valid for other buyers
- Search for similar lead requests
- Submit to a different buyer
Step 4: Contact Support (If Incorrect)
If you believe the detection is wrong:
- Go to Support
- Select "Duplicate detection issue"
- Provide the lead details
- Explain why it's not a duplicate
Common Scenarios
"I submitted to a different request!"
Duplicates can be blocked across a buyer's requests. If someone has multiple lead requests, a lead submitted to one may block submission to another.
"The name is different!"
Phone and email matches are prioritized. Same contact info = same person, even with name variations.
"It's been months since I submitted!"
There's no time limit on duplicate detection. Previous submissions are remembered.
"I haven't submitted this lead!"
Another seller may have. The system protects buyers from receiving the same lead from multiple sources.
How to Avoid Duplicate Issues
Before Submitting
Keep your own records
- Track what you've submitted
- Note which buyers you've sent leads to
- Maintain your own duplicate check
Use fresh leads
- Recent contacts are less likely duplicated
- Older lists have higher duplicate rates
- First-mover advantage matters
Target niche requests
- Less competition = fewer duplicates
- Specific requirements = unique leads
- Geographic niches can help
Organization Tips
Consider maintaining:
- Spreadsheet of submitted leads
- Which buyers you've submitted to
- Dates of submissions
This helps you avoid wasting time on duplicates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far back does duplicate detection go?
There's no fixed limit. The system checks against all previous submissions to that buyer.
Does duplicate detection work across all buyers?
No. Each buyer has their own duplicate pool. A lead rejected as duplicate for Buyer A may be accepted by Buyer B.
What if the buyer changed their request?
Even if a lead request changes, the buyer's duplicate history remains. Previous submissions still count.
Do I get penalized for trying to submit duplicates?
Occasional duplicates are normal and not penalized. Repeated attempts to submit known duplicates could be flagged.
